Background

Head Distiller Brian Taft is always looking for the next way to express the character of Drumshanbo Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey. Crafted from a mashbill of malted Irish barley, un-malted Irish barley, and Irish Barra Oats — and aged in single-use Kentucky Bourbon and Sherry Oloroso casks — the flagship expression is celebrated for its exceptional creaminess and complexity. In this special Tawny Port Cask Edition, that foundation becomes a canvas. Tawny Port, aged in small oak barrels and prized for its warming, nutty, dried-fruit character, leaves a rich impression on the whiskey's profile. The Port cask finishing adds layers of dried cherry, warm red fruit, toasted nuts, and a honeyed sweetness that complement the classic Drumshanbo pot spice and vanilla backbone perfectly. The result is a whiskey that feels at once familiar and completely new — deeply rooted in the Drumshanbo distilling philosophy of no added color, no chill filtration, and every drop distilled with intention.

Tasting Notes

Tawny Port finishing adds dried cherry, warm red fruit, and honeyed nuts to the Drumshanbo profile of pot spice and vanilla. Creamy and complex, with a long, elegant finish.

Drumshanbo Tawny Port Cask Single Pot Still Whiskey was aged for a full seven years in tawny port casks, giving it rich color and big notes of spice and dried fruits on the palate, along with a healthy dollop of tannins. If you’re unfamiliar with Irish pot-still whiskey—or you’ve only tried brands like Redbreast and Green Spot—give this a spin to see how it compares.

Points

With a single pot still recipe that includes barley, malt, and Irish barra oats, this was fully matured in tawny port casks. Red fruits and spice abound on the nose, with red apple, ripe Victoria plum, fresh cherry, florals, ruby grapefruit, and underlying pot still spiciness. Fresh and polished on the palate, with straightforward flavors of red apple, cherry, punchy spices, and cherry soda. (Release date: 2/25)
