It has a touch of its typical cream and vanilla up front, but that integrates as time goes on. It is beautifully structured, lingers nicely on the finish and has impressive concentration for the level and grape.

The 2016 Petite Sirah Reserve was aged for eight months in 40% new oak (mostly French, with a dollop of American). It comes in at 14% alcohol. This is always fun and a bottling that represents great value in Recanati's lineup. This is a good vintage for it. Opening soft and a bit creamy, this is nicely focused and shows the ability to absorb the wood to an appropriate extent. It tightens a bit on the finish and shows good structure too, although the tannins are very ripe. This is a bit understated, but it drinks beautifully. This year makes me think it has a little developmental potential too. Drink one now—it's perfectly accessible—but put a couple away for a few years and see what happens.

The 2015 Petite Sirah Reserve, set for release in September, was aged for eight months in a mixture of French and American barriques (40% new). It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Always one of my favorites near Recanati's value end of the spectrum, this is sexy but subtle. The caressing texture makes it sensual, the sweet edge of oak on the end gives it just a little verve and the wine is perfectly balanced, with controlled tannins. I don't ever expect this understated red to make "old bones," or turn into anything more special, but it should hold on decently for several years, at the least. Don't hesitate to drink it on the younger side, though.

The 2014 Petite Sirah Reserve is 100% Petite Sirah, an old vines, high-altitude bottling. It was aged for eight months in a mixture of American and French barriques (60% new, the rest used). It comes in at 13.5% alcohol. The price of this has crept up a bit, but if it is not quite the bargain it was in some years, it is still a very nice wine. Laced with a bit too much oak on opening, it ultimately pulls in some of those nuances with aeration and resolves into a more focused red with some tightness on the finish. Always a bit creamy, it rises above that and ultimately drinks great. This can still improve with a year or so in the cellar. If you can give it that time, the effort will pay some dividends by letting this pull in oak and moderate some tannins. It can be approached now with some aeration, if you must dive in.

An enticing nose of cherry pie and vanilla sets the stage for flavors of ripe cherry, blueberry, white chocolate and lilac. Grippy tannins hold their own against a strong vein of acidity, and the finish is notable for its light floral lift.

With aromas of strawberry and blueberry, this wine is tart at first sip, but then opens to rich flavors of slightly savory black cherry, strawberry, thyme and aniseed.

The 2011 Petite Sirah-Zinfandel Reserve is often a charming, good value option from Recanati. As the brand has developed, it has essentially become a Petite Sirah & there is only 5% Zinfandel lately (as recently as 2005, it had 30%). This year shows the same tasty fruit as always, but there is also notable acidity, some tannic pop and generally good structure as well, along with some hints of vanilla and blueberries. It is quite gripping on the finish...

Tongue-coating tannins and bright acidity that washes across the side palate harmonize in this wine. Flavors of bright cherry, thyme, oregano and lavender unfold in the mouth, while the lingering, velvety finish offers a bright, refreshing splash of citrus zest.

This is a jammy and plush selection that shows great intensity of flavor and weight. Dark notes of black plum, blackberry and boysenberry flood the nose and mouth, with secondary tones of toast and chocolate. Thick and mouthcoating on the palate, this ends with a woody, chocolate-kissed finish.

A jammy and ripe red, with blackberry, dark plum and blueberry flavors, featuring notes of black licorice. The dense finish shows hints of chocolate. Kosher.

...A blend of 70% Petit Sirah and the rest Zinfandel, it was aged solely in American oak, which has mostly and happily been absorbed. Still vibrant and bright, it is quite tasty, although with air it does show some mature nuances. It drinks nicely now, but it likely does need drinking in the near future. For the status and level of this wine, projecting it as a 10-year bottle is a pretty good result...
