Background

Driven by a passion for exceptional Nebbiolo, the Travaglini family has been producing remarkable, limited-production wines from their eponymous estate in Gattinara for four generations, with the fifth now on their way, learning from their parents. The Travaglini family has owned land in Gattinara since the beginning of the 19th century. They farmed a few hectares of land and produced wine for local consumption. It was not until 1958 however, when the third generation, Giancarlo, established the eponymous Travaglini Estate Winery. It was Giancarlo who recognized a greater potential in Gattinara and executed groundbreaking changes in his vineyards and cellar, unseen before in the appellation. His passion for Nebbiolo helped raise the profile of Gattinara, a commitment that has been carried on through the generations.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

The Travaglini family owns 59 hectares of vineyards; 55 of which are dedicated to vines, primarily Nebbiolo, which covers roughly 50% of the total Gattinara DOCG. A small portion of old vines, is planted to native varieties Vespolina and Bonarda. Travaglini is the only winery that produces this “Amarone-syle” of wine in northern Piedmont. In homage to the winery’s founder, Giancarlo, Il Sogno, means “The Dream.”

Winemaking & Aging

Hand-harvested grapes are dried on racks for 100 days in a naturally ventelated room. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks for approximately 35-45 days at a controlled temperature. Il Sogno is aged in small, Slavonian oak barrels for 36 months. 40% of the wine is aged separately for 12 months in French oak barriques. The reblended wine refines in bottle an additional 10 months.

Tasting Notes

Rich and luminous garnet color. On the nose, it reveals itself gradually, with abundant aromas of cherry, blackberry and plum jam, black cherry syrup, and balsamic nuances. It is completed by hints of menthol and anise that open up to notes of cocoa and cinnamon spices, paired with candied citrus peels, potpourri, mineral nuances, and raisins. On the palate, it is soft yet structured, supported by tension and freshness, with a pleasant savory note and enveloping tannins.

Points

Dark prunes, forest floor, intense potpourri, leather and meat. Full-bodied with zesty acidity, velvety tannins, great concentration and a thick, austere, yet balanced super-long finish. A wine made with appassimento, the process of natural partial dehydration of the grapes. Try after 2025. -J.S.
