Background

Driven by a passion for exceptional Nebbiolo, the Travaglini family has been producing remarkable, limited-production wines from their eponymous estate in Gattinara for four generations, with the fifth now on their way, learning from their parents. The Travaglini family has owned land in Gattinara since the beginning of the 19th century. They farmed a few hectares of land and produced wine for local consumption. It was not until 1958 however, when the third generation, Giancarlo, established the eponymous Travaglini Estate Winery. It was Giancarlo who recognized a greater potential in Gattinara and executed groundbreaking changes in his vineyards and cellar, unseen before in the appellation. His passion for Nebbiolo helped raise the profile of Gattinara, a commitment that has been carried on through the generations.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

The Travaglini family owns 59 hectares of vineyards; 55 of which are dedicated to vines, primarily Nebbiolo, which covers roughly 50% of the total Gattinara DOCG. A small portion of old vines, is planted to native varieties Vespolina and Bonarda. This small appellation lies in the rocky foothills of the Monte Rosa range, where ventilating winds blow down from the nearby Alps. Soils are rocky and rich in porphyry, granit and iron, imparting a reddish color in the soil. Similar in composition to the Alps, Monte Rosa’s sedimentary rocks is highly acidic, due to low levels of calcium carbonate and magnesium, and an absence of calcium. Vines grown in this rare soil produce grapes with a unique flavor profile, as well high acidity and tannins. Its northern, mountainous location experiences a continental climate, with very cold winters, warm, sunny summers, and a strong diurnal temperature shift.

Winemaking & Aging

Fermentation takes place in steel tanks for about 18 - 20 days at a controlled temperature. Wine is aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for about 30 months, followed by a few months bottle aging.

Tasting Notes

Bright garnet color. Floral bouquet of violets and rose petals, leading to fruity cherry and strawberry, with a hint of spice. The mineral palate has just a hint of iron, complementing small red fruits and fruit jellies.

Points

A restrained and smoky wine with a lot of freshness, showing aromas of potpourri, wild strawberries, citrus leaves and stony minerality. Full-bodied, it shows the firmness of nebbiolo well balanced by fruit concentration, refreshing acidity and a savory finish. Precise and balanced. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. -J.S.

Points

Aromas of warmed roses mingle with steamy floral notes and dried cherries. Notes of warm leather belt add savory complexity. The palate shows chewy tannins that currently present somewhat out of balance with the fruit components. Typical Gattinara structure, but needs time to integrate. Drink from 2026. Palm Bay International. —J.P.

With its famous square-shaped bottle, Travaglini is the most visible producer in Gattinara, as the estate accounts for 50% of the wine made here. I continue to be impressed with the wines, something I might not have said years ago. The 2019 Gattinara Riserva is one of the very best wines I have tasted here in some time. -A.G.

Vinous - November 2024

90
Points

Vanilla, Bourbon and toasty oak accents frame cherry and strawberry flavors in this racy red. Underscored by eucalyptus and mineral notes, ending with a grip of chewy tannins. Give this time to absorb the oak. Best from 2027 through 2038. 11,000 cases made, 3,250 cases imported. -B.S.
