Background

Planeta’s journey began at Sambuca di Sicilia, on the estate owned by the family since the 1600s. Here, three enthusiastic young Sicilians, Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta, under the guidance of Diego Planeta, began their winemaking venture in the mid-1980s. Subsequent years were spent matching the extraordinarily diverse Sicilian soils with both indigenous and international varieties. Planeta today encompasses six distinct wine estates in five regions across Sicily; Ulmo at Sambuca di Sicilia, Dispensa at Menfi, Dorilli at Vittoria, Buonivini at Noto, Sciara Nuova on Etna at Castiglione di Sicilia, and the newest addition, La Baronia at Capo Milazzo. Each vineyard site is carefully cultivated with grapes that best compliment the local terroir. All of the company’s activities have a single theme; environmental sustainability.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Mamertino is a denomination rooted in antiquity dating back to 289 B.C. Our smallest winery – La Baronia, which is 8 hectares of vineyard, surrounded by 20 hectares of ancient olive groves – is located 30 meters above sea level with alluvial soils that are loose, dark, deep, with few stones and generally rich with limey sections; it is a short distance from the sea. In 2011, Planeta began working with Fondazione Barone Lucifero, proprietor of the land, to restore and revive the unique biodiversity. Today this project is the symbol of our idea of sustainable viticulture, not only from the point of view of cultivation and production, but also from environmental, cultural, social and economic aspects.

Winemaking & Aging

The grapes were hand harvested in mid-September then sorted selection and destalking. The grapes fermented in stainless steel vats and remained on the skins for 14 days. Then racked in a soft press, and the wine thus obtained underwent malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. The wine is aged for12 months in 35 hl barrels.

Tasting Notes

Brilliant, intense ruby color with dark violet reflexes. Explosive nose with notes of Mediterranean maquis, blue fruits and jammy berries. On the palate thick but refined tannins are well integrated with the oak.

The 2017 Mamertino is a blend of Nero d’Avola and the rare Nocera grape, hailing from coastal vineyards in the extreme northeast of Sicily. It features a gorgeous display of crushed blueberries and sweet spice, complicated by hints of tobacco and white smoke. This is soft and silky, yet conveys an almost salty tension, as the Mamertino then gives way to a pure expression of red and blue fruits, all motivated by juicy acidity, which slowly fizzles out to a lasting note of sweet violet florals and cheek-puckering tannins. It’s a unique and gorgeous expression of variety and place. -E.G.

The Planeta team makes this blend with nocera and nero d’Avola culled from low-lying vines at the tip of Sicily’s Capo Milazzo peninsula. The two varieties work well together, the robust and deeply-colored nocera (40 percent) bolstering nero d’Avola’s plummy fruit tones and lively acidity. Hints of dark chocolate, licorice and dried herbs weave through the flavors as the wine moves to a saline finish. – S.J.

 Best of Year 2020

Made with 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Nocera, this has aromas of dark-skinned berry, baking spice and Mediterranean herb. Reflecting the nose, the mediumbodied palate has concentrated flavors of dried Morello cherry, blackberry jam and cinnamon set against taut, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2021–2025. —K.O.

The 2017 Mamertino is a unique wine that represents a DOC wine appellation in Milazzo (in the northern tip of Sicily) that gets very little use as far as I can tell. The traditional blend is Nero d'Avola and Nocera, and the wine is easy in approach and execution. There's nothing too complicated here—just fresh cherry and blackberry followed by earthy tones and some subtle mineral or sea breeze nuances. – M.L.
