Background

Since 1626, the Trimbach family have been a reference point for fine Alsace wine. They are also one of the largest owners of Grand Cru vineyards in the region which account for an impressive third of their total production. At every level, their wines embody the celebrated Trimbach style: structured, long-lived, fruit-driven, dry, elegant, and above all balanced. Family is also central to everyday life at Trimbach. Winemaking is currently managed by 13th-generation Julien while 12th-generatiom Jean and his niece, 13th-generation Anne, are global brand ambassadors. In 2023, Trimbach was certified HVE-3 Organic reflecting their dedication to creating the highest-caliber expressions of their terroir.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Riesling Classic comes from Trimbach's vines and those of their partner winegrowers. The vines are located on the hillsides with soils mainly composed of limestone, sandstone, and marl with a south and southeast exposure; 20% to 30% comes from the Grands Crus of Ribeauvillé. The 2023 winter was dry and mild, followed by a wetter spring. The summer was hot and dry, but some rain helped the vines cope with water stress. The harvest was sunny with cool nights, ideal for the Riesling to ripen beautifully. It's a vintage with freshness and fruitiness.

Winemaking & Aging

The grapes were crushed and delicately pressed in a pneumatic press, then vinified in a dry style in stainless steel vats and old casks. There was no malolactic fermentation or long aging on lees in order to preserve freshness, liveliness and fruity aromas. The wine is bottled in the following spring and ages one year, minimum, in the cellar before release.

Tasting Notes

This is the very definition of the Alsace Riesling, well anchored in the dry and balanced Trimbach style. It has aromas of lemon, pear, and tropical fruit with candied orange. It shines with its elegant liveliness, crunchiness, and notes of white flowers and citrus fruits leading to a mineral-driven finish.

Points

The 2023 Riesling is the house's biggest production. Depending on the vintage, up to 400,000 bottles are made, blended from sites across Alsace, including grand cru fruit. The nose is a marvel of crunchy green and red apple aromas. It's scented but tenderly so, promising tons of crunch and freshness. The palate delivers this in spades with vivacious freshness and verve on a light, strait-laced and clean-cut bottle—the emblematic house style. The 2023 is beautifully dry and bright with a lip-smacking, lemon-infused finish. (Bone-dry) -A.K.
