Background

Château Greysac, located in the Médoc hamlet of Begadan, north of St. Estèphe, was built in the 1700s and purchased by the visionary Jean Guyon in 2012. Guyon, a tastemaker and designer who famously moved in the circles of fine art and couture fashion, arrived with a very clear objective: to craft fine wines with the same care and attention to detail as a Cru Classé, but at far more approachable prices. By modernizing the winery, he carefully combined the best traditions of Bordeaux with new technology and, looking to the future, has overhauled vineyard practices with sustainability in mind. In 2018, his efforts began paying serious dividends when the estate was classified as Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. As the largest land owner in the Médoc, Guyon also enjoys full control over quality and consistency that few other Bordelaise châteaux can claim — which explains why, since 2015, Greysac has been a persistent category leader as the #1 Médoc over $20 in the U.S.

TERROIR & VINTAGE NOTES

Château Greysac’s 68 ha / 168 acre vineyard is located on a clay-gravel hilltop. The vines are an average age of 35 years old with a planting density of 7,500 vines per hectare (Double Guyot pruning). The vineyard is sustainably farmed. The 2019 vintage in Bordeaux is considered one of the best of the last decade, combining the richness of warm vintages with the balance and freshness typical of classic Bordeaux. The warm summer conditions produced concentrated berries, while cool nights preserved acidity and aromatic complexity. Ideal harvest conditions allowed precise picking and excellent ripeness across the Médoc.

Winemaking & Aging

Pre-fermentation maceration lasts two days with a 4-5 week cuvaison after alcoholic fermentation in thermo-regulated stainless steel and cement tanks. Malolactic fermentation is in oak. Lees stirring for three months, then aged for 12 months (50% in one year old French oak barrels and 50% in tanks).

Tasting Notes

An elegant expression with blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark cherry along with subtle notes of cedar, cocoa and spice. A full-bodied wine with smooth, structured tannins.

Points

Fresh-herb and berry character with spice and cedar. Medium body. Juicy finish. Already very drinkable and balanced.

90-92
Points

The 2019 Greysac has an excellent bouquet with perfumed blackberry, iris and cedar aromas that are beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, plenty of black fruit laced with cedar and mint, just a touch of bitterness towards the off-dry finish that will keep you coming back for another sip. This is a well-crafted Greysac with a promising future.

The 2019 Greysac presents a well-defined nose of blackberry, cedar and graphite scents that unfurl with aeration. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy black fruit and fine depth. Quite supple in the mouth, with a pure, caressing finish that belies its backbone. Very fine.

Firm, confident and sappy black fruits, with lovely freshness running through alongside clear black pepper spicing. These Domaines Rollan de By wines are successful because they are confidently and deftly put together.

Decanter - June 2025

90
Points

Deep ruby/purple-hued, the 2019 Château Greysac offers up solid aromatics of red and black cherries, leafy herbs, cedar, and spicy oak. These carry to a medium-bodied Médoc that has wonderful overall balance, ripe tannins, and a great mid-palate. It's an outstanding effort well worth enjoying over the coming 10-12 years or so.
