Nestled at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Sardinia is one of the world’s rare “Blue Zones” — a designation reserved for regions where communities consistently live longer, more vibrant lives than anywhere else on earth. In the mountainous Nuoro province and the pastoral villages of the Barbagia region, centenarian populations are not an anomaly but a quiet, enduring tradition. Scholars, demographers, and wellness researchers have traveled from across the globe to understand what sustains these communities — and what they find, time and again, is a life deeply rooted in place: in the land, in the seasons, and in a culture of unhurried, intentional living that stretches back millennia. Alta Vita was born from a desire to honor and express that spirit.

Ancient Soils, Modern Wines

Sardinia's viticultural story begins beneath the surface. The island's geology is among the oldest in the Mediterranean basin, dominated by ancient granite, basalt, and schist formations that predate much of continental Europe. These well-draining, mineral-rich soils force vines to dig deep — stressing them in precisely the right ways that concentrate flavor and create complexity in the fruit. In the higher elevations, the terrain rises dramatically, offering an ideal diurnal temperature range — warm days and cool nights — that preserves natural acidity and aromatic intensity while allowing the grapes to achieve full phenolic ripeness.

The Mediterranean climate brings long, sun-saturated growing seasons, low rainfall during the critical summer months, and reliably dry harvest conditions that minimize disease pressure. Sardinia is also shaped by its winds — the Mistral from the north and the Tramontane across the highlands — which ventilate the canopy, moderate temperatures, and contribute to the distinctive salinity and minerality that distinguishes great Sardinian wine from any other expression of these varieties elsewhere in the world.

Celebrating Cannonau

The beating heart of Alta Vita is Cannonau, a grape as storied as the island itself. While genetically identical to Garnacha and Grenache, the thick-skinned red variety cultivated across Spain and southern France, centuries of isolation and adaptation on Sardinia have allowed Cannonau to evolved into something all its own.

It has been shaped by Sardinia’s unique combination of ancient soils, intense sun, and maritime winds. Many ampelographers and wine historians believe that Sardinia is, in fact, the original home of the grape — predating its presence on the Iberian Peninsula — making Cannonau not a derivative of Grenache, but potentially its very ancestor. In the glass, Cannonau is a wine of uncommon depth and character: deeply pigmented, richly aromatic, with a structure built on ripe dark fruit, warm spice, and a tannic backbone that rewards time. Cannonau vines on Sardinia are often old — sometimes extraordinarily so — their roots penetrating deep into the terrain, yielding extraordinary complexity. Alta Vita also crafts a Vermentino, Sardinia's star white grape, for those who prefer the island’s bright, mineral-driven expression in a lighter register — but it is Cannonau that defines our identity and anchors the range.
