A really bright, fruity red with blackberry and cherry aromas and hints of orange peel. It’s medium-bodied with a very tight palate and an intense finish. Very tight and firm. Needs a year or two to open. Try after 2022.

Single Vineyard Chardonnay San Pablo Estate

2018 Argentina Mendoza
94 Points

The 2018 Chardonnay Salentein Single Vineyard Viñedo Las Secuoyas from Los Árboles, Uco Valley, was aged for 10 months in used oak. Golden yellow in the glass. The complex nose features aromas of pear, apple, lemon zest, ginger, acacia and hints of linden blossom over a bed of wood and creamed corn, enlivened by a touch of nutmeg. Intense and voluminous in the mouth, it is unctuous in feel but has a precisely judged freshness that lends greater depth to the aromas of oak and smoke. The finish is extremely long thanks to the aging process, with hints of hazelnut and caramel returning at the end.

With fruit from La Morra, the Beni di Batasiolo 2016 Barolo Cerequio (with 13,000 bottles made) reveals dried berry fruit, blackcurrant, dusty clay and licorice. All these classic Nebbiolo aromas are enhanced by some faint mineral or iron-like tones. The Beni di Batasiolo 2016 Barolo Briccolina draws its fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, and you can count on more fruit weight and power as a result. Bonera

2018 Italy Sicily
91 Points

The bouquet is intense, leading off with a rush of black cherries, cassis, plum, and sweet violets, as the 2018 Bonera blossoms in the glass, becoming more lifted and refined. Its silky textures give way to fleshy, ripe red and black fruits, zesty spices and inner florals. This tapers off long, washing the senses in currants and berries, with hints of grippy tannins that tug at the cheeks, kept fresh through mineral-tinged acids. The Bonera, a blend of equal parts Nero d'Avola and Cabernet Franc, is fruit-forward but also quite balanced, providing a lot of upfront appeal.
