The Wemyss family has had a longstanding passion for malt whisky and their connections with the industry date back to the turn of the 19th century when John Haig (founder of Haig's) built his first distillery on Wemyss land. Even today barley from the Wemyss Estate is prized by many of the leading distillers, and Cameronbridge Distillery is located just a few miles from the castle itself. With this passion came the gradual realization that, even for the knowledgeable consumer, much of the malt whisky terminology can be confusing. Our range of handcrafted malts was conceived with the aim of making them more accessible and understandable. We use the taste and aromas of the individual whiskies to identify each bottling, rather than the distillery, so the consumer can more easily understand the style being purchased. Up to sixteen different single malt whiskies are expertly blended together before introducing the signature malts to create three distinct taste profiles under Charles Macleans guidance: 'Spicy' (Spice King), 'Peaty' (Peat Chimney) and 'Honeyed' (The Hive).


The Hive is a small batch, hand-crafted Scotch whisky that captures the sweetness of Speyside in a smooth, honey-like expression. 

Tasting Notes

Honey gold color. Aromas of heather smoke drift alongside stone fruits and orange zest. On the palate, warm peat puffs over rich espresso and muscovado sugar. To finish, flinty minerality sizzles out to a soft, sweet finale. Enjoy Peat Chimney neat, on the rocks, served crisp and invigorating in a highball with soda water and mint sprig garnish, or a smoky take on an Old Fashioned or Penicillin.


The waxy honey aroma suggests this blended malt Scotch is appropriately named. Add water to dial down alcohol heat on the palate: The reward is mild toasted coconut sweetness and a hint of agave nectar, leading into a warming, prickly black-and-red-pepper finish. —K.N.

The Hive Sour

  • 1.5 oz The Hive
  • 0.75 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
  • 0.5 oz Simple Syrup
  • 1 Egg White
  • Lemon twist to garnish
  • Add all ingredients to a shaker and dry shake for 30 seconds (without ice).
  • Add ice and shake again until well-chilled.
  • Double strain into a rocks glass with ice.
  • Garnish with a lemon twist.
