The Plan was simple: to take outstanding Australian wine to the world and in doing so become internationally recognized as a winery of great distinction. Four generations have weaved their passion and dedication into one of Australia’s most dedicated winemaking families: The McGuigans.
The McGuigan family name is synonymous with Australian winemaking. It all began in 1880 when Owen McGuigan settled in Australia’s Hunter Valley. His agricultural experience made him an unwitting viticulturalist, sparking an obsession with wine that would drive future generations. Owen’s son, Perc, was detail oriented and precise; he closely scrutinized the weather, which allowed him to establish benchmarks to produce world-class Australian wine. He is celebrated as one of six inaugural Hunter Valley Living Legends. Later, Perc’s oldest son Brian took the family blueprint international, establishing McGuigan wines as we know it today and breaking into over 20 different countries by 1999.
Today’s chief winemaker and CEO, Neil McGuigan, started his wine career alongside his brother Brian. Neil is one of Australia’s most recognized and awarded winemakers with 30+ years experience. He aims to work outside the bounds of tradition to take Aussie wine to the next level. Passionate about crafting innovative, quality wines that are varietally true with a distinct sense of place, Neil’s philosophy is simple – the wine is the hero.
McGuigan is the only winery to be named International Winemaker of the Year a record four times by the International Wine & Spirits Competition in London.
As an acclaimed winemaker with extensive experience and insight into the wine industry, Neil is a respected wine judge at national and international wine competitions. Under his helm, McGuigan is the only winery in the world to be crowned International Winemaker of the Year by the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition a record four times.
