Ruby-red. Intense, spice-accented aromas of dried cherry, redcurrant and pipe tobacco, with a hint of cedar in the background. Fleshy and sweet, showing a seamless texture to the deep, bright red fruit compote and candied rose flavors. Picks up a smoky quality with air and finishes with outstanding clarity and lingering smokiness. While this complex wine is approachable now, especially with some aeration, its track record for aging suggests that at least another five years of patience would be rewarded.

This top-shelf Cabernet never fails, and in this warm year the wine is dark in color, with lush yet precise aromas of graphite, fresh blackberry, baking spices and forest floor. A deep palate is just racy enough, while spicy flavors of cassis include integrated herbal notes. Closing flavors of coffee and chocolate, along with soft tannins, make this approachable now and best through 2022.

I had an early tasting of the 2012 Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon soon after bottling that I kept for this article. It was a warm, rich, concentrated and powerful but fine vintage. The nose has the exuberance of the 2010 with aromas of flowers, ripe black fruit, damsons, and cherries with spicy touches and a hint of mint. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannins and a slightly chalky texture. This is extremely young and unevolved. I tasted some older vintages, down to 1998, which was a cool vintage with a nose of leather and cured meat; and 2008, which, ten years later, still kept the same character. This is one of those wines that are never out of fashion, but it?s not really fashionable either. It?s a true classic. It?s the prototype of Cabernet Sauvignon from Maipo.

...This 2011 has a meaty, smoky nose which turns to some red and black fruit (damsons), with cassis, revealing a very ripe Cabernet with a spicy background and a pinch of mint. It manages to keep the freshness and has pungent flavors...The old vines behave in incredible ways, as the late harvest did not produce any unbalances in the wine.

Despite cool conditions in 2011, or quite possibly because of them, this is thriving. Aromas of cedar, earth, spice and berry fruits are stylish and comported. The palate on this perennially superb Cabernet is focused, intense and balanced. Flavors of spicy red currant and briary berry are thorough and finish with length on a mocha note. Drink through 2026.

This rich style drips with chocolate mousse notes that envelop a concentrated core of dark currant, roasted plum and black fig flavors. Shows plenty of mocha and cocoa powder details as well, with hints of mint, all supported by fresh acidity.

It has a beautiful nose of red currants, fresh fruit (blood orange), some spices and a clear note of mint that adds freshness and complexity to the wine. The tannins are sweet, very fine, with strong, clean flavors and the note of mint making a comeback in the long finish. Very complete and balanced, true to the grape and the place: pure Maipo Cabernet.

The 2009 Casa Real Cabernet Sauvignon has a well-defined nose of blackberry, raspberry, mint and a touch of juniper berry. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp, grainy tannins, good fruit concentration with tobacco infused, masculine, dry black fruit on the austere but nicely defined finish.

Saturated ruby. Sexy, expansive aromas of blackberry, cherry-vanilla and spice cake, accentuated by suave tobacco and herbal qualities and a touch of woodsmoke. Lush and creamy on entry, then tighter in the mid-palate, offering sweet red and dark berry preserve and vanilla flavors and a more serious note of bitter cherry. The dark fruit and vanilla notes carry through a long, gently tannic, spicy finish. I'll bet this wine will be drinking well by its seventh birthday but it also has the depth to age.

One of Chile?s benchmark wines is typically clean, pure and inviting. The nose is ripe and lusty, while the palate is vital, juicy, fresh and crisp, with fine Cabernet flavors of black currant, cherry, chocolate and more. Probably the closest thing in style to great Napa Valley Cab; deep, dense and long on the finish. A hearty but refined wine to drink now through 2017.
