Fontanafredda named “European Winery of the Year”
(November 2017) – Leading US wine and spirits importer Palm Bay International is thrilled to announce Fontanafredda’s selection as Wine Enthusiast’s 2017 “European Winery of the Year.” Fontanafredda, located in the heart of the Langhe, has been a benchmark for Barolo and Barbera wines since 1878. Owners Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo Filangieri together with chief winemaker Danilo Drocco have long been committed to producing the highest quality wines and bringing greater sustainability to the land of the estate.
Oscar Farinetti, Luca Baffigo Filangieri and Piero Bagnasco, president and co-owner, co-owner, and chief executive officer, respectively, for Fontanafredda, together with the winery’s entire team are deeply gratified by the recognition. “For us it’s the culmination of ten years of work,” says Farinetti “during which, we transitioned to organic farming, focusing all of our energies on the careful interpretation of the superb fruit that the hills of Fontanafredda provide.”
Environmental sustainability and a focus on the well-being of the consumer and community have become the basis for all research and experimentation in both the vineyards and the cellar at Fontanafredda. In 2016, thanks to a significant investment of 2 million euro, Fontanafredda began the process to convert all 120 hectares (approximately 300 acres) of estate-owned land to organic farming, which will make Fontanafredda the largest certified organic producer (CCPB certified) in Piedmont starting with the 2019 vintage.
The winery has also increased their investment in hospitality, with plans for four new buildings, constructed to ensure minimum environmental impact, including luxury guest accommodations and a spa by 2019, adding to the current 25 guest rooms, four fine dining restaurants, cultural center and exquisite nature park open to the public and enhanced by plaques placed amongst the trees, historic buildings and vineyards that include quotes from famous writers and poets reflecting on the area’s culture, history and beauty.
Fontanafredda’s combined efforts have contributed to the increased quality of the wines while maintaining great respect for the environment and creating a cultural community within the Langhe open to wine lovers around the world.
Each year, Wine Enthusiast honors exceptional individuals and companies for outstanding achievements that have contributed to the success of the wine and alcoholic beverage industries. Fontanafredda will be recognized at Wine Enthusiast’s 18th annual prestigious Wine Star Awards at a black-tie gala in Miami on Monday, January 29, 2018.
The story of Fontanafredda is a noble one. It began in 1858, when Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of Italy, purchased the estate (a former hunting preserve) in order to produce fine Barolo for his personal use. Today, the 250-acre Fontanafredda Barolo cru property in Serralunga d’Alba is the single largest contiguous wine estate in the Langhe. Additional properties in the communes of Barolo and Diano d’ Alba communes bring the total acreage of estate-owned land to 305. The ability to source fruit from some of the Barolo region’s most prized vineyard sites provides Fontanafredda with Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto grapes of the highest quality.
