Sella & Mosca was founded by Messrs. Sella and Mosca, two Piedmontese businessmen, over 100 years ago. Today, the property is owned by Campari and is among the largest wine estates in all of Italy at a sprawling 1,600 acres, with more than 1,200 acres of vines. Winemaking at the estate is supervised by Mario Consorte, Sella & Mosca's senior director of winemaking, and is regularly monitored using aerial photography and infrared film. Progress is further monitored by the winery's up-to-the-minute research lab and quality control facility.
Begin your visit to Sella & Mosca's I Piani estate at the Enoteca with an informative video – available in Italian or English – about the history of the vineyards and the products available. Continue to the cellars, built in 1903, where the red wines are aged in small barriques and large Slavonian oak casks. Following your visit to the red wine cellars, move on to the Noble Family Villamarina cellar, where the winery’s own Marchese di Villamarina is aged, and continue to the small company museum where a complimentary glass of wine will be waiting for you. Finally, end your tour back in the Enoteca where the entire Sella & Mosca line is available for purchase. (Please allow approximately 1 ½ hours for the full tour.)
Guided tours are available in Italian and English, and are always conducted by company experts. Tours of the vineyards are available at no cost for groups with their own transportation. Note that there are no dining facilities available at the winery, but almost all of the restaurants in the area serve Sella & Mosca wines.
For a fine Mediterranean experience, conclude your day with a visit to the local archaeological sites, including “Necropoli of Anghelu Ruju”, the Nuraghe Palmavera, a Sardinian prehistoric tower dated at about 1300 BC, and the “Grotte di Nettuno” caves. (Directions available at winery – please inquire.)
