Profile of Castello di Fonterutoli
Offering wine drinkers and wine lovers the world over one of the best examples of Chianti Classico, and Italian winemaking in general.
The land on which Castello di Fonterutoli lies is rich not only in it’s terroir but also it’s history, which dates back to the early 9th century when Emperor Otto III ruled the Holy Roman Empire.
Located between Florence and Siena, atop the hills in the heart of Chianti Classico, Castello di Fonterutoli is truly the embodiment of classic tradition together with modern achievement. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, it still retains its original form and architectural structure. Today, the vineyards and winery comprise 470 hectares.
Four distinct vineyards lie between 230 -500 meters above sea level, with southern and western exposure to help grow the most robust grapes in the region: Siepi,
Fonterutoli, Belvedere, and Badiola.
Siepi, 22 hectares, is planted mainly with Sangiovese, Merlot and a small portion of Cabernet Sauvignon. With a unique microclimate and beneficial shifts in day to night temperatures, these grapes yield an exceptional quality.
Fonterutoli sits at the core of the winery, growing Sangiovese and Merlot grapes at an altitude of 420 meters above sea level. Excellent water drainage and two types of cultivation methods result in aromatic wines with great complexity.
Belvedere is planted entirely with Sangiovese grapes at an average altitude of 300 meters above sea level. With plenty of rich, textured soil which is characterized by limestone and marl, these grapes help produce flavorful wines with concentrated aromas and color.
Badiola encompasses about 19 hectares of Sangiovese and Merlot. Located in the small town of Radda in Chianti, it is named for the ancient medieval structures built nearby. Relatively cool temperatures due to higher altitudes yield grapes with very unique aromatic characteristics.
