Portia Prima is the debut release from the Portia estate in Spain’s exciting Ribera del Duero region. It is the outcome of a venture begun some 15 years ago by the Martinez family, owners of Bodegas Faustino, a leading producer of wines from the Rioja.

The name of the new property has a dual origin, both as a reference to the seventh satellite of the planet Uranus (representing the pioneer, inventor, creator and artist according to astrology), and the Latin word for a token offering made in ancient times as a symbol of gratitude toward the elements in return for a healthy and abundant harvest.

Construction of the spectacular $25.6-million Portia winemaking facility is currently in progress. Commissioned by the Martinez family, the project represents the first ever winery designed by internationally famed architect Norman Foster, head of the London-based design team, Foster + Partners.

The property embraces 400 acres of terrain enjoying an eastern and southern orientation in Ribera del Duero. Vineyards are planted chiefly with Tempranillo (known locally as Tinta Fina) at an average density of 1,200 vines per acre.
