Ser Gioveto

The rich texture forms a backdrop for the cherry, plum, mint and leather flavors. Soft until the dusty tannins kick in, but balanced overall. Reveals a hint of sweet spice on the salty finish. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2020.

Sergio Zingarelli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione

2012 Italy Chianti
90 Points

The 2012 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Sergio Zingarelli shows what Rocca delle Macie is capable of at their best. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, spices, new leather and menthol flesh out as the 2012 shows off its succulent, layered personality. Already quite expressive, the 2012 should drink well for a handful of years.

Chianti Classico

2011 Italy Chianti
91 Points

Last year, this wine was a Riserva (now it is a Gran Selezione). The 2012 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Riserva di Fizzano shows ample fullness and ripeness with dark cherry and spice aromas that are both compelling and generous. This wine shows a good sense of lightness and balance. It is easy to drink and approachable, but it also offers bigger structure to pair with succulent meat dishes.

Chianti Classico Riserva

2012 Italy Chianti
88 Points

The 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Famiglia Zingarelli is Sangiovese with small percentages of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon added to the blend. The 2012 vintage was a complicated one but the Zingarelli family sourced fruit from different sites to make this wine. They have also just completed a 35-hectare replanting effort. Dark berry fruit, spice and toasted almond give this wine a classic taste profile for Chianti Classico.

Tenuta Sant' Alfonso

2013 Italy Chianti
89 Points

Made with 100% Sangiovese sourced from the Fizzano vineyard, the 2013 Chianti Classico Tenuta Sant'Alfonso paints a pretty portrait of the variety. The soils in this seven-hectare vineyard are rich with clay and you feel an added sense of density and power in the wine as a result. The wine is fermented in cement and later moved to large oak casks. The structure and the dark berry flavors you taste are very much driven by the heavier soils.

A blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino, this opens with aromas of underbush, toasted oak, blackberry and grilled herb. On the firm palate, notes of espresso, clove and aniseed accent a core of dried black cherry while assertive tannins provide the framework.

Riserva di Fizzano Gran Selezione

2010 Italy Chianti
90 Points

Underbrush, spice and plum aromas lead the nose on this blend of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot. The smooth palate delivers a core of juicy black cherry accented with licorice and espresso. Polished and round, this is already drinking well, but can age at least a few more years.
