An exceptional Malbec from the Uco Valley, using grapes from a vineyard planted in 1997 at an altitude of 1,300 meters, and aged in used barrels for 16 months. The year and execution by oenologist José Galante’s team raise the bar. Dense purple in the glass. The intense but remarkably precise and delicate nose presents aromas of red currant and plum plus notes of jam, sandalwood, cigar box and hints of violet and herb. Juicy and firm on the palate, with a fresh expression and fine tannins that are well balanced by the alcohol (13.5%), both of which stretch out the bold finish.

Bright, saturated medium ruby. Precise, perfumed scents of black raspberry, blackberry, licorice, violet, tropical dark chocolate and minerals. Juicy, densely packed and powerfully mineral, projecting terrific savory thrust and energy to its black fruit, licorice and bitter chocolate flavors. Offers a very attractive combination of chocolatey ripeness and brisk, savory mineral and herb notes from a cool year, with no easy sweetness at all. This penetrating, chalky, highly nuanced wine finishes with a firm tannic spine and terrific subtle length and lift. Still very unevolved and in need of patience. This is suaver and more refined than Salentein's single-vineyard Malbecs from 2015, suggesting gentler extraction and riper tannins. (from sandy loam soil with boulders and calcaire at an altitude of 1,300 meters)

The 2016 Single Vineyard Malbec La Pampa was sourced from the estate vineyard in Los Árboles at 1,300 meters in altitude planted with an ungrafted massal selection at 2,500 plants per hectare in 1997 on alluvial soils from the Las Tunas River in San Pablo. Fifty percent of the volume fermented in 7,000-liter oak vats after a cold soak and the rest in barrique. The wine matured in 225-liter French oak barrels for 16 months. There is another single-vineyard Malbec from another single vineyard in San Pablo, in the alluvial cone of the Villegas River at slightly higher altitude. This is a little lower in altitude and feels a tad riper, not as ripe as the one from Gualtallary but riper than Los Javalíes, which is the name of the other higher-altitude vineyard in San Pablo. A classical ripe and lush Malbec with chalky tannins. 12,000 bottles were filled in December 2017.

Blackberry, cassis and plum aromas are muscled up and chocolaty. A flush palate with depth is balanced, while this tastes of blackberry and cassis. A hint of raisin works its way onto the finish, which is ripe and seemingly not fortified by tartaric acidity, hence this loses some steam towards the end. Drink through 2022. -MS.

Healthy medium ruby. Some very ripe notes to the aromas of blackberry, violet, licorice and molten chocolate. Very plush, glossy Malbec with strong exotic oak tones of coconut and caramel currently overshadowing cassis fruit. Finishes with a bit of alcoholic warmth and an element of charred oak that soon turns a bit dry. A second bottle of roughly equal quality displayed some porty high tones.

The 2014 Single Vineyard Malbec La Pampa is sourced from the estate vineyard at Los Árboles at some 1,300 meters altitude planted with an ungrafted massale selection in 1997 that names the wine. Fermentation was carried out in 7,000-liter oak vats after a cold soak and the wine matured in oak barrels for 16 months where it also underwent malolactic fermentation. This is the most classical among their single vineyards, a wine that was born in 2010 sourced from very stony soils. There is more ripeness without excess, more volume, very expressive, with lots of aromas, a lush texture, juicy tannins and a tasty, long finish. This is a good expression of the Malbec in this zone.

This fully ripe vineyard-designated Malbec deals aromas of blackberry, cassis, raisin and cedar cigar box. Seriously built and almost monolithic in size and stature, this offers a wave of upfront oak that frames blackberry, loamy earth and baking spice flavors. A woody, persistent, elegant finish is a fine way for this to fade out. Drink through 2023.

The 2012 Single Vineyard Malbec comes from a low-yielding vintage with grapes sourced from the La Pampa Estate at some 1,300 meters altitude planted with ungrafted vines in 1997. It has a savory nose with spicy aromas, somehow earthy, with very ripe fruit and a touch of tar and cured meat denoting evolution. It fermented in 7,000-liter oak vats and it matured in oak barrels for 16 months. The full-bodied, tasty palate has plenty of tannins, is compact and powerful, and has an almost salty finish. Bright medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet, licorice and dark chocolate. Plush, rich and sweet, displaying excellent depth and extract to its blackberry and licorice flavors. This youthfully imploded wine has a tightly coiled spring. Finishes with well-buffered tannins, excellent energy and slowly building length.
