A rich and layered chardonnay with so much cooked apple and pear character and vanilla undertones. It's a full-bodied white with the full Burgundy treatment. Sexy and enticing. Drink or hold.
Bright and expressive, this elegant white is finely knit, with rich accents of oak spice and toast underscoring flavors of lemon parfait, Gala apple and lime blossom. Fine and creamy, presenting a lingering, minerally finish. Drink now through 2025.
An elegant, medium-bodied white, featuring rich flavors of glazed apricot and salted butter, with hints of crushed hazelnut, lime blossom and lemon curd. This is reined in by sleek, focusing acidity and a subtle streak of smoky minerality. Drink now through 2024.
Bright straw-yellow. Aromas of peach, banana, lime, nut oil, clove and crushed stone. Then dense, dry and deep in the mouth, offering fresh apricot and lime flavors complicated by minerals and minty herbs. Finishes very long and with zingy reminders of stone fruits and lime. An excellent showing today, but built to age. There’s nothing exotic about this Chardonnay, which might surprise those who remember earlier vintages of it. This is Planeta’s most improved wine, and it’s now a truly world-class Chardonnay (the 2013 is also an outstanding wine). Made from grapes grown from the Maroccoli and Ulmo vineyards around Sambuca di Sicilia. The use of fruit from these higher vineyards (roughly 420 meters above sea level; older vintages were made with Chardonnay grapes from lower-lying, almost seaside vineyards), a decrease in the buttery oaky component, and earlier harvesting have all contributed to this wine’s improvement.
Light- to medium-bodied and balanced, this fresh and easy-drinking version offers a round, creamy palate of Gala apple, chopped hazelnut, lemon curd and white peach. Drink now through 2019
Lively acidity keeps this medium-bodied white fresh and focused, framing the poached apple, lemon curd, blanched almond and vanilla notes, while the smoky undercurrent gains momentum on the spiced finish.
There's a reason why this finessed bottling is one of Sicily's most iconic whites. It doles out juicy yellow apple, mature pear, white grapefruit, yellow peach and tropical fruit accented by notes of vanilla and hazelnut, with fresh acidity. Subtle oak adds complexity and structure.
Wonderful cooked apples to this white, and a light toffee and vanilla bean character. Full body with a rich and wonderful palate of dried tropical fruits and hints of apricots. A full and wild style.
A toasty Chardonnay, displaying a modern profile of roasted apple, grilled pineapple and yellow melon fruit woven with layers of baking spice, chalk and smoke.
Creamy, smooth and rich, this gorgeous bottling offers flavors of lemon mousse, apricot and vanilla, backed by well-integrated acidity and fruity concentration.
Starts off milky and then turns to minerals, sliced apples, mangos and honey. Full body, with bright acidity and nutty, almond, apple and hints of tropical fruit. Drink now or hold.
Planeta's Chardonnay is one of the nicest expressions of this international grape variety made on Italian soil. From sunny Sicily, the wine recalls some of the characteristics of Chardonnay from California, with its creamy, rich mouthfeel and beautifully intense aromas of stone fruit, citrus, vanilla, yellow rose and exotic spice.
Here is a deeply saturated Chardonnay with a golden color and thick notes of candied fruit, almond, butterscotch and a playful hint of pecorino cheese rind. The wine is thick and succulent in the mouth, with a soft approach that is capped by a piquant, almost spicy finish.
The 2008 Chardonnay is a very pretty, refined white laced with ripe apricots, flowers and tangerine. This mid-weight Chardonnay offers lovely balance and a clean, bracing finish...from Planeta, one of Sicily's better-known estates.
A big, luscious Chardonnay, displaying the full panoply of tropical fruit notes. Sicily's answer to the question, 'Does the world need another Chardonnay?'
Opulent, with loads of flavor on the nose leading to a full-bodied palate. Shows good fresh acidity. All in harmony. Listed second among Jo Cooke's Recommended Wines from Sicily.
I was very impressed with the 2007 Chardonnay, which isn't the heavy behemoth of prior vintages. Super-ripe tropical fruit, butterscotch and sweet spices are layered into the frame of this quintessentially Sicilian Chardonnay. The wine reveals notable length and a clean, refreshing finish that provides balance. The 2007 is an especially elegant Chardonnay from Planeta.
Butter and vanilla notes complement the aromas of banana, candied orange and pineapple, with a sexy jasmine accent providing lift. Very ripe chardonnay, hinting at some residual sweetness but with noteworthy intensity and underlying structure to the ripe banana and pineapple flavors. This smooth, shapely chardonnay shows terrific balance.
This vintage of Planeta's celebrated Chardonnay is full-bodied and lush, with notes of peach, yellow rose, vanilla and honey, framed by toasted hazelnuts. The wine delivers a creamy, almost chewy mouthfeel with power and intensity, and continues with a long, soft finish.
This full-throttle chardonnay shows all-out barrel fermentation and batonnage character. Big and round, with lots going on inside the glass. It finishes with opulent honey, caramel and butterscotch character. Drink now.
