Nestled near the historic village of Barile in Basilicata’s Vulture region, the Vigne di Mezzo estate was established by the founders of Feudi di San Gregorio in 2000. The endeavor is designed to give new impetus to the winemaking industry of this ancient winemaking region and was inspired by the enormous success achieved at the Feudi di San Gregorio estate in the neighboring region of Campania.
Along with the expert guidance of consulting enologist Riccardo Cotarella, one of Italy’s most esteemed winemaking talents, Vigne di Mezzo has the precise intention of spreading what the people of this area have shared for thousands of years: a passion for viticulture. The estate emphasizes the inherent quality of Basilicata’s terroir while placing a modern spin on native grapes in an effort to bring recognition to the lesser-known treasures of the south.
Production Area
From a cluster of vineyards near the villages of Barile, Rionero in Vulture and Rampolla, all located at approximately 1,500 feet above sea level and sharing a south-east exposure, on the lower slopes of the Vulture mountain in Basilicata, southern Italy. Vines are planted in a density of approximately 4,000 per acre. The soil here is rich and fertile, thanks to the presence of volcanic ashes resulting from long-ago eruptions, enhanced by a good content of humus and excellent natural drainage
Grape Varieties
100% Aglianico
Vinification
Vines are trained using a local variation (“capanno”) of the Guyot system with three shoots. Pruning is conducted once a year. Yields are typically 9 lbs per vine. Grapes are handpicked in the final days of October and early November. After de-stemming and a gentle pressing, a lengthy maceration on the skins ensues. The resulting wine spends 14 months in French oak barriques
