A Never Ending Quest for Excellence
Col d’Orcia is the internationally celebrated
producer of one of Italy’s most revered
red wines, Brunello di Montalcino. Situated on
the outskirts of the medieval hilltop village
of Montalcino in Tuscany’s Siena province,
the estate has a rich winemaking history that
dates back to the 1700s. In the hands of the Cinzano
family since 1973, Col d’Orcia is owned
today by Count Francesco Marone Cinzano. Winemaking
is entrusted to chief enologist Pablo Harri, whom
many contemporary wine experts credit with being
one of Tuscany’s foremost exponents in the
art of making outstanding Brunello di Montalcino
wines. Read more about Col d’Orcia here.
A visit to the beautiful Col d’Orcia property,
dotted with vineyards, olive and cypress
trees, includes a guided tour of the winemaking
facilities and aging cellar, followed by a tasting
of the entire range. Please allow one hour for
tour and tasting. The wines, along with Col d’Orcia’s
own olive oil and grappa, are available for sale
at the winery shop.
While in the area, the 12th century Abbazia di
Sant’Antimo is not to be missed. Approximately
6 miles south of Montalcino, this abbey is an
impressive example of Romanesque architecture,
and remarkably intact. Gregorian chants performed
by the abbey’s resident monks fill the church
each day – contact the local tourist office
for a schedule. The medieval walled city of Siena,
just over 25 miles away, offers stunning architectural
sites, museums and galleries, shopping, fine dining
and seemingly endless meandering streets to wander
through. |
