Pommard Le Taillefer

Download Complete Production Notes

Burgundy represents, for many, the epitome of world-class winemaking. Standing amongst the most historic Burgundian houses of this famed French region is Labouré-Roi. Established in 1832, this forward-thinking winery is today one of the appellation’s most successful and prolific producers with wines distributed to over thirty countries worldwide and annual sales revenues in excess of $70 million.

On each bottle of Labouré-Roi is the regal fleur-de-lys, the emblem of the French King Louis VII. While this house respects its remarkable heritage, it has embraced the future like few other Burgundian producers. Labouré-Roi’s winemaking facility is indeed one of the more technically-advanced within the region, with a cellaring capacity of 1,300 barrels. This supplements an impressive 16th century cellar, which is still used for storage and aging of select bottles.

Located in Nuits-Saint-George, Labouré-Roi has long been committed to making world-class wine accessible to all. To that end, it currently works with an impressive one hundred growers throughout nearly every major winemaking region of France, from regional appellations and the most celebrated Burgundy villages, to superlative Premier and Grand Cru vineyards. Labouré-Roi’s fine wines have over the years received numerous international awards and accolades.

Production Area
For centuries, Pommard has been considered the quintessential Burgundy: deep red in color, powerfully aromatic, solid and dependable. The appellation, one of the first designated AOCs (1936), is planted exclusively to Pinot Noir. Labouré Roi Pommard arises from a network of small vineyards, each producing just five to 15 barrels in entirety. Thanks to ideal growing conditions, Pinot Noir grapes reach optimum maturity and balance. On the lower portions of the slopes, the soil is largely alluvial in content. Mid-slope, the clay and limestone rich soils are well drained thanks to the presence of stony debris. The uppermost portions of the slopes comprise Jurassic (Oxfordian) marls, brown calcic and brown limestone soils. In places, the soil is reddened by the presence of iron. Exposure: south or east. Altitudes: 250-330 meters (720-984 feet). Pommard, with its dense, massive tannins, is a stellar representative of the Côte de Beaune and is highly prized for it aging ability. Its name, "taillefer" comes from "taille" (pruning) and "fer" (iron), indicating the difficulty of pruning at the top of the hillside, where the slope is steepest.

Vinification
Our wines come from approximately twenty lots belonging to 11 estates. They each produce from 5 to 15 barrels. Due to the perfect exposure of their vineyard, the grapes reach full maturity and are harvested at the end of September. After fermentation the wine is aged 15 months -- 20% in new oak barrels and 80% in 3-year-old oak barrels.

The aromas are redolent of blackberry, gooseberry, cherry and ripe plum. At maturity, it tends towards leather, chocolate and pepper.
