This blend—mostly sangiovese and ciliegiolo— undergoes a brief maceration to produce a lively wine that’s ready to drink. The pliant tannins give shape to the wild blueberry and black cherry flavors without impeding them, while notes of sage and bitter chocolate add interest. It’s a match for juicy char-grilled burgers.

The 2014 Spezieri, Col d'Orcia's Sangiovese/Canaiolo blend, is one of the better entry-level wines readers will find in this vintage. Sweet red cherry, plum, rosemary, spice, menthol and licorice are front and center. Drink this pliant, expressive red over the next 2-3 years.

February 2016

A spicy style, offering black pepper, cinnamon and cherry flavors, with a lingering tobacco note. Solidly structured, delivering a lasting mineral aftertaste. Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

This easy going blended red from Tuscany opens with bright cherry and blackberry aromas against a backdrop of bitter almond and a touch of Indian spice. The fresh acidity makes this a perfect pasta wine.

May 2013

Supple in texture, full bodied, and well balanced, this is a moderately intense blend, with light tannin and a long finish, tasting of cherry jam, herbs, honey, and plum.

The 2008 Spezieri is a delicious, harmonious red from Col d'Orcia, one of Montalcino?s top producers. A blend of 40% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, 20% Ciliegiolo and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine offers excellent definition and a long, polished close. Sweet cherries, tobacco and earthiness linger on the finish. This is a terrific value in Tuscan red. Listed among Italy's Finest Wine Values.

Wine Advocate
August 2009

Full-bodied, round, and ripely flavored; this wine is moderately rich and lightly oaky on the finish, tasting of cherry, plum, tea, and red currant. Long, smooth finish. Excellent value.
