Bright straw-yellow. Aromas of peach, banana, lime, nut oil, clove and crushed stone. Then dense, dry and deep in the mouth, offering fresh apricot and lime flavors complicated by minerals and minty herbs. Finishes very long and with zingy reminders of stone fruits and lime. An excellent showing today, but built to age. There’s nothing exotic about this Chardonnay, which might surprise those who remember earlier vintages of it. This is Planeta’s most improved wine, and it’s now a truly world-class Chardonnay (the 2013 is also an outstanding wine). Made from grapes grown from the Maroccoli and Ulmo vineyards around Sambuca di Sicilia. The use of fruit from these higher vineyards (roughly 420 meters above sea level; older vintages were made with Chardonnay grapes from lower-lying, almost seaside vineyards), a decrease in the buttery oaky component, and earlier harvesting have all contributed to this wine’s improvement.


An elegant, medium-bodied white, featuring rich flavors of glazed apricot and salted butter, with hints of crushed hazelnut, lime blossom and lemon curd. This is reined in by sleek, focusing acidity and a subtle streak of smoky minerality. Drink now through 2024.

I was very impressed with the 2007 Chardonnay, which isn't the heavy behemoth of prior vintages. Super-ripe tropical fruit, butterscotch and sweet spices are layered into the frame of this quintessentially Sicilian Chardonnay. The wine reveals notable length and a clean, refreshing finish that provides balance. The 2007 is an especially elegant Chardonnay from Planeta.
