The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Lago is a very linear and tight red wine with a great sense of focus and direct intensity. The wine is not labeled Riserva, but it is aged for one additional year compared to a Brunello annata. Bright berry and dried fruit aromas are followed by very etched mineral notes with dusty graphite and dried spice. I tasted this wine after the bottle had been opened for a day and those distinctive aromas of crushed granite appeared even more evident. This is a lovely wine that underlines the austere and powerful side of this classic vintage.

Bright, deep red-ruby. Floral and herbal nuances complement red cherry, dark plum, underbrush and spices. Seamless and intense, with sweet dark fruit flavors complicated by hints of dried fruits (hazelnuts, almonds), orange peel and wet earth.  In a distinctly virile, almost austere style, this wine saturates the palate on the long, easygoing finish.  I'd give it five or six years in the cellar. The Vigna del Lago vineyard is located in Montalcino’s north-eastern sector at about 270 meters above sea level on mainly clay soil and usually gives Val di Suga’s daintiest, most rigid and floral wine.
